Noob here. Just bought a 2002 A6 and noticed a strange problem with the two center tail lights, the one on each side of the license plate. They illuminate with the low beams on and stop illuminating with the high beams. It doesn't seem like it should do that, has anyomne seen that before.

Rear fog lights?

 

The lights on either side of the plate are rear fog lights. they should only come on when the headlight is in the on position and you pull it out 2 clicks I think. I had a problem with mine coming on while my headlights were on, I also noticed my switch was getting hot. i found that when I pulled out the switch they went off and thought it had something to do with how my front foglights had been rewired to work as daylight running lights, I think looking back it was just a short in my switch that eventually failed. I think the headlight switch had been rnning hot for some time as the black covering on the switch was mostly peeled off(my car had been loaned to a relative for a couple of years) then they stopped working at all. I have since wired them to a separate switch as I need them to pass inspection but did not want to buy a new headlight switch....

 

With the headlights on, the first detente (pull back) is front fog lights and second is front and rear (on each side of the license plate) fogs.
