Yeh.. so umm just found out that the valves on the drivers side are bent.. So the mechanic that knows everything about audis, and i mean everything it's just amazing.. So for the job to change the valves it's $300 and we buy the new valves.. So umm we will get the car in bout 2 weeks or so.. Wow how awesome is it when you have a well known mechanic that charges very little..

While the heads are off, as ppgoal pointed out, you can certainly replace several things.
- Head gaskets. You'll not spend an arm and a leg to get them (probably around $ 30/piece for your car; - for my 95 were $ 21/piece)
- Valve cover gaskets - $ 6-8/piece
- Valley Pan Gasket - $ 6-8
- Rubber O-ring gaskets for the coolant pipes going on the back of the cyl heads - dirt cheap
- Rubber O-ring for the coolant pipe going in the back of the thermostat housing - dirt cheap
- Coolant temperature sensors - both of them (IF you have problems with your temp gauge)
- Exhaust manifold gaskets
- Intake manifold gaskets
- if your engine is a bit noisy, you may want to replace the 2 non-retention valves in the valley pan (about $ 45/piece)
and
- Of course, don't forget to purchase your valves WITH new stem SEALS.
The valves themselves will be your biggest expense, as far as parts...

Something like that... if you buy the "cheap" Osvat brand.
Actually at Arizona Autohaus are $ 16 for a 2002 A6 3.0 (AVK engine)
Make that times 12 (if you have a 12v) = $ 192
If you have the 30V engine, then that makes for a more expensive proposition - $ 480.
If you buy the TRW (better brand - seemingly), then those are around $ 41/piece!
