sounds like a wheel sensor or just needs a clean up since its intermittent there will be a code stored but you need VAG to find out, if the ABS light is on the ABS is switched off and if its off then the system is reading ok and on so it does sound like the above + it might be a loose connection

My ABS light was on for a while. I took it to the shop and I guess there is a switch or something in the brake pedal area that got stuck. It was a while ago, so I don't remember for sure. I think they just cleaned it up or out.
Sorry to be so vague, but it was a while ago.

ahh my appols there ( the light is on all the time ) not intermittent[:-]then there is a problem without doubt and probably a wheel sensor so how come they couldn't find a code? what software/tool did they use ( if any ) or did they just clear the code in the hope it wouldn't come back on, the latter sounds about right so get them to check it again and give you a read out of the fault codes

They gave me the old switch and I took it apart to see what the problem was - it turned out one of the contacts must have heated up and almost "welded" itself together. No big deal and it was an easy problem to correct.
