Default 2004 A6 2.7 Front hub bearings

I am looking for info on replacing the front hub bearings. BLAUfergnügen! Inc shows the bearing as a FLANGED BOLT ON. Bentley doesn't show the replacement procedure for the bearing. I email Bentley and they sent me to a forum link with a PDF that shows the bearing replacement major deal. Must be pressed out of spindle using a special press. I called BLAUfergnügen and they said it is a FLANGED BOLT ON. Much easier to replace. I am wondering if anyone has info on this.

Thanks

it is flanged on newer A6's............... yours is pressed in and it is kinda a big job, for you need a hydraulic press with certain adapters

Here is another link that shows the bearing as a flange bolt on. I don't not who to believe. I guess the only way to tell which bearing my Audi has is to remove the rotor and look unless someone knows.

Yours will have the bolt on bearing. But, you still have to press the hub out of the bearing pack, so you still need a press. The basic procedure is to undo your axle bolt, undo your lower control arms from the frame, pull the knuckle out far enough to get the axle out, unbolt the bearing pack, press out the old hub, press in the new one a reassemble. Not bad, but not "easy".

Many of the professional auto parts houses - not Autozone - have shops that will press the old out and the new in - They are the same guys that turn rotors, etc.

I used to do the bearings on my boat trailer every two years to be safe and could not justify spending the money for a press.

I know I will need a press to press hub out of bearing. This type of bearing is much easier to replace than the type Bentley say's I have. I ordered a 6 ton bench type press from Harbour Frieght for $55.00 shipped. Looks like it should do the job. As soon as it warms up a bit I will do job and post info.

Thanks

The press is easy -- it the fixtures you need to attach to the parts - good luck!

04 had both types I think. If you had aluminum sports suspension, then it is flange type. If you have steel type component, then it is press in type.

Even with a press, you may need to improvise on thrust plates, pistons, seperator and etc as NH_USA said. Audi dealers have special portable press that can take the attach to the support without removing it from the car.

If you look at some specialty tool catalogs, you can buy a special on the car press for this. The more common application is for Japanese cars with captured brake rotors. Some companies work overtime to make Audi look good!
