2004 A6 2.7 vs 2007 A6 4.2
Hey all,
Anyone ever gone from a 2.7T to a 4.2 A6? Reason I ask is because I currently have a 2004 2.7T A6 S-Line and it still drives like new and I own it 100%. But the lifters started ticking lately, 500 miles after a dealer provided oil change, and I am taking it in to have it checked out. Of course my extended warranty expired in December. IF there are bad lifters and they need to be changed I am told it can get rather pricey (I have heard around 4 grand, half the trade-in value). My A6 has 57000 miles so it’s not really that old and, aside from the recent development with the lifters, runs like new. I drove a 18000 mile 2007 TT 2.0T recently and MUCH preferred my A6. That said....the dealership has a 2007 A6 4.2 for sale, Audi certified so it has a 3 year warranty. Only 22000 miles on it. I could afford the 600 dollar a month payment on it...but I am wondering if I would be better off paying to have the lifters in my current 2.7T fixed (if need be) What would you guys do? Pay 4 grand to fix an out of warranty relatively low-mileage 2.7T or splurge and get the 2007 4.2? I guess the main point I am trying to make is...does a 2.7T S-Line drive much like the 2007 4.2? If I bought the 4.2 would I be paying for a car that, essentially, drives like the one I have now?
Thanks!

Some ticking is normal. It looks to me that 6-7 months of car payments will pay for your current repairs, if they are even necessary. Then you have no payments. Your current A6 is not that much higher mileage than the 2007. Or is this just a cry for helping you justify a newer Audi? I feel badly spending $600 a few times a year on maintenance and repairs. I cannot imagine paying that every month for a few years, PLUS the maintenance stuff.

Heh. Partly looking for justification for a new one but yeah, the ticking is all the time, been doing it for two weeks, driving me nuts. Cold, warm, no difference. But, I suppose the sane thing to do would be to have it fixed, if required. 4 grand, if needed, is certainly cheaper than a new car. Hopefully it’s just an oddity that an oil treatment will fix. Besides, if I get a new car the wife will likely “let” me get it if she can have a cat. This was actually proposed. I hate cats. Just trying to decide if a 4.2 is worth it in the long run but being the cat will likely still be around after the 4.2 is gone. Hmmm…probably not worth it.

IMO, do NOT use any "oil treatments". They probably put the wrong oil on your motor. You should have the oil changed again making sure you get a good 0W30 weight synthetic. That should quiet them darn ticks down.
Keep the S-line !

We recently did the exact swap, only it wasn't an s-4, it was a 98 2.8 with a sport pkg.
The A6 4.2 is definatly a great car, however i miss the A4, it is just more fun to drive. The A6 is larger, definatly more grunt (!!!) but it just lacks the fun factor of the 4. Way more luxury and gizmo's & creature comforts and I'm in no way putting it down - they are just two different cars. The 6 is beautiful to drive, runs like stink, and seems to need filling WAY more often. Also has a 22 gallon tank vs. the 17, so it kind of takes your breath away at the pump.
If you are a person who enjoys luxury, and a great drive, go for the A6
If like me, you enjoy driving the twisties (spirited driving) keep the A4.
LIke mentioned above, I'd change to a different oil before you take it in to have the lifters repaired though!!!
