I am sure I can buy one, however, they are not cheap. Does anyone know if there a replacement tensioner that eliminates this problem?

**** u guys are making me nervous. Just bought mine a week ago. A little upset because the didn't come with nav as we were told, and the check engine light came on two days later. The dealership hooked it up to a reader and it came back to flaps in the intake manifold getting either stick open or closed getting work done next week

This just happened to me. Same 2005 A6 Quattro with 70,000 miles. Dealer wanted $13,000 to fix ALL FOUR chains. That is more the the value of the car!!! That Audi dealer would give me nothing on the trade in - wouldn't negotiate on another car anyway. So right now that Audi is in my driveway. I will try to sell it as is. (Wanted to make a planter out of it but I don't think the homeowners association would like that.) Since I could not get Audi to work with me (same conversations you all had) I now drive a 2013 Cadillac SRX. I got a deal that was better that what Audi was offering for their Q5 (comparable vehicle). I haven't driven an American car since my first car in 1979 (a '69 Mustang) and I gotta say: Cadillac really stepped up their game!

I just picked up the car yesterday after almost 3 months. Engine went on 2/18. This whole process sucked a big 1 and I would not wish it on anyone. That being said I did get some pity from one of the service managers @ Audi and they worked with me a lot. Searching high and low I found about 15 engines to choose from ranging from about $3k-$5k. I ended up going w/ Superior Auto's engine w/ 43k mi. and got it for $3550. Total install w/ tran. flush was $3700 @ the dealer. I now have the old block to strip on my spar time. I still have people calling to buy the car w/ the blown engine for $2500. I know I'm not out of the woods yet but hopes are high!

This is so sad to read. 1-Because I was looking forward to a newer Audi someday (gently used, of course). 2-I had a very positive experience with the Audi dealership in Rochester NY. And 3-I have had two TB jobs and while they are an expensive piece of maintenance, the car is running fine at 216k miles and will probably take me to a quarter-million as planned.

bump.

Exact same thing has happened to me with my 2005 Audi A6 3.2L. I chose to buy a used engine (as the original engine was toast after the timing chain tensioners stretched too far) and have the used engine put in by a local European auto mechanic here in Kansas City. The used engine swap will cost around $8k when all said and done.

Default To fix or not to fix: 2005 A6 Audi Quatro 3.2

We have a 2005 A6 Quattro 3.2 with 168,000 miles that we still owe $5,000 on. We purchased it three years ago at 125,000 miles. We were just told the timing chain needs to be replaced at a cost of $5,000. We have loved the car up until now and have had no problems. We might think about fixing it, if we knew that there wouldn't be any more such surprises lurking in the future. We've seen some posts recommending replacing the whole motor with another used one as being a better option. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would move on. I kept the car for about a year after replacing the engine. Both boot mechanisms wore in the front, $3k to fix. Audi's are awesome cars to drive, I however will never buy one unless it comes with a complete maintenance package. They change so much with each model, after about 60,000 miles or 3 years, they really can't help you much. No telling what will go wrong and finding parts are tough.
