Default 2006 A6 4.2... APR chip worth it?

Hey all,

I'm about to buy a 2006 A6 4.2 and put the APR chip in it. Stock performance tests, as I recall, were 0-60 in 7.1 seconds, which SUCKS compared to my 2000 A6 2.7 that's 0-60 in 6.5 seconds. APR has limited software for the 4.2 (I'm calling them tomorrow to give them the part # of this car's ECU to see if they support it), so unless it'll bring the accelleration down to something that's, at worst, just as fast as what I have is worth it, though sub-6 seconds is certainly preferred.

Does anyone have any experience with this to offer any insight?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Best,
Scott

How many miles do you have on the car? When I hit 20K in my stock 05 4.2 itfinally opened up and now runs in the 5.9-6.1 range when put into launch mode. The chips I have seen only add about 10 hp, i.e. less than 3%, and will probably not make much of a difference.

It's a 2006: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...82698&rd=1

I don't own it yet, but am most likely buying it this weekend. I can live with 5.9 - 6.1, since it is faster than what I have, plus without the annoying turbo lag. I had thought about getting an '07 335i, since that thing is a rocket ship, but that means going back to 2WD. No thanks.

The APR chip brings it up from 335 HP to 352 HP (+17) and from 310 ft lbs to 312 ft lbs (+2) for the 93 octane program. I also read some other reviews and wonder what Edmunds was eating when he did a road test andgot 7.1 seconds. Car & Driver got 6.3 and Jalopnik Reviews gave it 6.0. Interesting variation between the three.

The car certainly got faster between 10K miles and 20K miles, butEdminds is way off base if it says 7.1. Perhaps the 3.2 is at 7.1. You will like the 4.2.

correct the 3.2 does 0-60 in 7.1 sec while the 4.2 does it in 6 seconds

I think you will notice the torque of the V8 and I doubt the "seat of the pants" calibration will notice the few tenths difference in 0-60. Considering the gain of the chip vs. the cost and potential risk of it being detected by Audi, I'm not sure it would be worth it.

I must say that interior color is gorgeous.....real nice color combo. I just hope you get that thing for less than the $34,900 Buy It Now price! I make pretty good coin, but I really can't justify a vehicle of that price. My previous purchase (before my A6) was just about that same price, and 3 years later it was worth $18,000 which meant it cost me over $5600 a year just for the pleasure of driving it.....or put another way, about $15 a day. Definitely not something I plan to do again soon.

Hey Costner,

I'm on the fence about whether to chip it or not, so it'll really be a question of how the car feels when I get it. If it's faster than what I have, I may have no need to chip it, since I'm pretty happy with my 2.7's performance. Being a motorcyclist, both on- and off-road, speed often gets me into trouble, so something in the 5.5 second range might not be a good thing for me. )

Regarding price, KBB for this car is $42,700 retail, $37,900 private, and that's without the Audi certified warranties (100k parts/laborand 75k maintenance). My 2.7 is in good-to-fair condition (needs tires, has minor cosmetic issues) and the dealer is giving me $7k as a trade, although KBB is anywhere between $7500 and $8500 trade. Considering that, even in a private deal,$34,900 is $2,000 less than book, I feel happy with the deal and have not dickered. I've shopped around for months and, so far, this is by far the best deal, all things considered. But, I do understand the dilemma of spending $35k for a car that's only 2 years old and has lost so much of its value. What's the alternative, though: get a** raped on a brand new Audi, or change vehicles and go with an Altima? No thanks... I'll keep the Quattro, thanks.

I paid $55K for mine back in 2005. I have had it for 36 months and if it is worth the buy it know price of $34,900 ( I have more options that the one funkeys is considering) it will have cost me $558 per month. For the enjoyment it has given me, the 4.2 was well worth the money. Go buy the car, have fun with it.
