Default 2006 A6Q Avant buyer's gotchas

Hi everyone,

New. Looking for some help. I've been on the internet for a few hours now looking for pointers, FAQ, buyer's guides, etc. for an 06 Avant I'm looking at for my wife.

I'm a definite car enthusiast. I have a couple of older BMWs and work on them myself. I have an 88 M3 that I have tracked & autocrossed relentlessly and put hundreds (or thousands) of hours into. I'm picky about cars and when my wife asked about getting a newer car, I took her to see pretty much everything, but reserved a short list.

This week, I stumbled across a really nice, local A6 Avant. We went to take a look, and my wife loved it. I will admit (being a BMW guy) that the styling of new Audis is very avant-garde, and the A6 is nothing short of stunning (and it has a full-size spare!).

So, I know that pretty much every car has it's, we'll say "quirks," or maybe "features." What should I be looking for with a 55k mile 2006 A6Q Avant? Like I said, I can pretty much fix anything and I found that Bentley has a nice manual. I'm just looking for where to start with a pre-purchase inspection, so I don't mind issues as long as I know what I'm getting into.

Speaking of a pre-purchase, while our home is in metro ATL, I'm actually working now in Chicago.....can someone suggest a good indy in the W Chicago burbs to get a pre-purchase?

Thanks a lot in advance!!!!

I have an older Avant and love it. In a pinch it can be used as a small truck or bus and it it has plenty of room when we go shopping. I leave the cargo cover up most of the time so people can't see the dead bodies I freguently have in the back - that should be convient if your in ChiTown.

As for mechanical issues - I don't know a lot about the 06 so other's can be more help. Just expect to spend more than you think for parts and repairs. Finding a good Indy and supply of parts if you plan aon doing anything yourself should be high on your 2do list.

55K miles A6 should not have any issues. They will start surfacing around 75K. How many miles do expect to keep it for? If you are going to dump it before 100K, you won't have much to replace. After that, anything (and everything) goes!

Most of issues that I hear with C6s are electrical related. I haven't heard any mechanical stuff. Knowing Germans, their cars always have electrical issues...

Also the good thing is that 3.2 FSI is timing chain driven, not belt, which is good since the belt replacement is a large maintenance bill around 75K to 80K.
