the car is making a high pitched whirring noise which gets louder as it shifts into gear but dies down when it is cruising in that gear

Have you tried draining the old differential gear lube and replacing it with new synthetic gear lube?

If a diff is making noise that you can hear clearly in the cabin, it is shot. Or, at least, the bearings are. Unless you have a mechanical limited slip, which we don't. Or, unless you have a racing gear set, which we don't.

In any case, it needs to be taken to a skilled Audi mechanic. Getting the preload and backlash set up correctly for quiet operation is not an easy task.

bob,

i am in puerto rico which is a difficult place to find a skilled audi mechanic. they are recommending that i replace the whole transmission which they think will be less costly for me to do. i am thinking about a refurbished one. will keep you updated. thanks for the advice.

i originally took my audi in because the tcm was shot, the mechanic reprogrammed it, i am guessing he just downloaded new software. at the same time he changed the trans fluid and filter. well the tcm is still acting up and as soon as i got the car back it was making a new sound, a high pitched whining in idle which gets louder as it moves into a new gear. the mechanic told me it is the differential which is bad. is it possible he could have damaged it by changing the trans fluid? i'm confused because it wasn't making the sound before i took the car in. i'm taking it to a new shop thur. and will let you know.

thanks for all the advice - andy
