Default 4.2 Brakes?

I recantly bought my first audi (2001 A6 4.2) and need to replace the pads and rotors. I was wondering if brakes listed as 2.7 will work for my 4.2? If not I heard that the rs6 has many of the same parts so would rs6 brakes work? I haven't been able to find any brakes specifically labeled 4.2 on a reputable site. So I figured Id ask the experts before I bought the wrong set.

Thanks,
Devin

No-the rotors have to be specific.
Go to ECSTUNING.com and check with them. They know the difference- and after my checking around- last week- they had the best prices and were the most knowledgeable about the differences between the A6 4.2 and the V6s... They say that there are 2 different offsets for the 4.2 A6--16.7mm and 22.7mm and you can tell by going to the website- looking at the pictures they have- then looking at your wheels into the rotors... If it sticks out abnormally- then it is the larger one- like mine...

Hope you don't have piston retraction issues like I do..

In general- some things are different for the 4.2 and not everyone knows for sure- you have to double and triple check with certain things beating home "you are sure this is right for the 4.2 A6, right..." That is what I have learned in my 4.5 years with the V8...

the only sure way is to take the wheel off and get the part number right off the outside of the rotor. If they are the original ones of course. i did that with mine and no problems..

All maintenance has been done through the dealer until now, more or less because Im unwilling to shell out a grand to have some back room mechanic bend me over on something I can do my self.

Thanks for all your help going to check out the site right now for the rotors, but are the pads the same as the rs6 or 2.7?

$649.95 are you serious, this is the best price for a single set of rotors? I think I just sold my Audi

I think they put a few different types on the 2.7- some the same and some different... There are 2 pads per caliper and 4 pads per caliper...and there may be different sized rotors.. I would be careful to paint across the board similarities on anything. I would bet the RS6 has a super upgrade and is not the same.

Mine are the 4 pad per caliper variety- and I would guess that yours are the same- but who knows- you may have to call your Audi Dealer- give them your vin- and ask them or take off your wheels and check.

You can check the site for pad differences too-

Im going to pull the wheel off and try to get a part number. Found some cheap rotors and a 4 piece ESC rotor set for cheaper then the 2 piece on their site but will probably go cheap for now and switch them out in the fall for the real ESC and some nice ceramic pads. Any opinions PosiQuiet pads?

The S6 does have the same rotor size as the 4.2. The RS6 has the much larger brakes.

Don't think you were looking in the right place- or maybe you are pricing them singularly- the prices are for the set...
the ecs ones were $229 for the fronts if you have the larger ones like mine and $179 for the rears--$400
Did you get it straighted out?

Yes I found some more reasonably priced brakes, but if you could send me a direct link to the brakes that you are talking about I would appreciate it. Has anyone heard of Irotors XDS, EBC, Cbrakes or Centric brakes?, if so any opinions on them?
