Default 4.2 Engine

I'm replacing the motor in my 2000 model 4.2 A6, and I've been on eBay seeing my year model motor that apparently fits VIN letter "L" going for around $2k while the '97-99 and '01-03 model 4.2's go for under a grand. Anyone know why the 2000 year model motors are so much more expensive? Also anyone know a good place to get a replacement motor for a good price? Thanks in advance guys.

In 97-99, the 4.2 was an A8 only engine. For 2000, Audi fit it into the A6. I'm not sure why the earlier motor would be more expensive but you want to stick with something that came out an A6 so the brackets and hoses and vacuum lines are correct.

Thanks Bob. So as long as the engine I purchase is out of an A6 and has VIN letter "L" it should work correct?,

Yes, that is the most assured way. I can see no difference in the part numbers or descriptions from 200 to 2001 so you should be OK with a later model year engine but don't be surprised if you have to swap a part or two.
