i am looking at purchasing a new vehicle. i have the choice between a 2004 4.2 quattro and a 2003 3.0. which one do you recommend ? what are the maintenance cost?

i am driving about 10k a year.

Maintenance costs should be roughly the same, other than every 40k when you change spark plugs. Ditto for repairs, other than coilpacks and tires (wider tire on the 4.2). From what I have read on this forum, the 3.0 is not as reliable as some other engines and will require an expensive timing belt change every 75-90k. I believe, but could be wrong, that the 4.2 has a timing chain that does not have to be replaced. I'm sure a 4.2 owner will correct me.

 

4.2 owner here, and wish it had a timing chain! would saved me over a grand. But the 4.2 is an awesome engine, but like previously stated, a trip to the tire shop will cost ya. I run 255's and getting a set of Michilin pilot A/S sports set me back 900 bucks. well worth it though!
