if i remember right, it's to signify the merging of 4 seperate companies that came together to form the company now known as Audi. i used to know what their names were, but i don't remember anymore.

The four circles represent thefour Saxon vehicle brands that were merged in 1932- Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer -to create Auto Union AG. The company later changed its name to Audi.

The four-ring logo
The Audi emblem is four overlapping rings that represent the Auto Union. The Audi emblem symbolizes Audi amalgamation of Audi with DKW, Horch and Wanderer: the first ring represents Audi, the second represents DKW, third is Horch, and the fourth and last ring Wanderer.

Interesting read. Audi was started by August Horch. Horch means "Hark" or "Listen" in German. Audi means the same thing in Latin. When Horch left his partners to make cars on his own, he switched his brand name to Audi.

I got my avatar from a historical drawing. If you squint you can read the four car companies on the rings.

RR686, you don't deserve to own an Audi . Asking questions about the history...you should know it first, much before you know which engine you have on ur A6 -

LOL

Years ago, my first thought about the 4 rings was that it was an extension of the Borrmean rings used by the Ballantine brewing company. Since Audi is German, they were not happy with only 3 rings so they added another to show that their beer was better than the American beer. I realized that Ballantine was ale, not beer, but that didn’t affect my thought process because ale tends to be English and the Germans didn’t like them either. (Gennie Cream tops my list of ales!)

I came up with this opinion during a time I was “sampling” various brands of the beverages in question.

Go to Wikipedia and look up Audi to get the real info – meanwhile I’ll return to sampling beverages and see if I can get more enlightenment.
