Default 6-speed transmission questions

i have a 2000 A6 w/ a 2.7t w/ mods, and a 6spd manual transmission. one thing that bugs me is the closeness of the gearing. i'm estimating that my a6 makes around 325-350 whp. it has new k03 turbos and a flash on the pcm for a stock setup. even lacking the additional performance i could be seeing in those 2 items, i am only able to get on the throttle for 0.75 - 1.5 seconds before running out of tach in 1st-3rd. has anyone swapped in a 5spd tranny or even found a gear kit to give it longer legs? the constant shifting seems to be eating up alot of potential time.

That's an insane amount of whp for new OEM turbos and a reflash! Are you sure you didn't mean to type KO4 turbos? Stock crank hp is only 250 . . . but either way, assuming the 2.7T shares an identical block to the 2.8, the 2.8's 5-speed should bolt right up.

Or . . . you could simply skip 1-3 or 2-4 while shifting .

i should have specified what mods. but before i do that, i'll stand corrected in that it is hp at the crank. i don't know what i was thinking about when i posted whp. if you click on the garage link you can see a list of the mods. i essentially need k04's and an upgraded fuel system to be stage III+, though i was thinking of more of an RS4 path using RS4 cams and upgrading the fuel system, intake pipes and headers before i dumped k04s onto it. perhaps my thinking is backwards?

skipping gears is what i do now. usually go from 2nd to 4th. that's a pretty big step and the shift time is longer. the type of driving i usually do isn't hard-start type driving, and 1st usually isn't an issue, but when i do hard start, i barely have time to let the clutch link up before i have to grab 2nd. it makes for a jumpy start and it feels like it would cost me 0-60ft times.

It is true that skip-shifting like that is slower, and probably not the answer you were looking for. Unfortunately, in the tuning world, most transmission upgrades are for shorter gears, as I'm sure you're probably aware of. Getting taller gears, unless I'm mistaken, would likely have to be a custom job, and rather costly.

Personally, I would look into the 2.8L 5-speed, although I'm not sure what those ratios are (ie. if the first few gears are taller). Interested to see what you come up with though! I'm imagining once I tack on similar mods, I might run into the same problem.

I did not jump to your garage, but unless you beefed up your clutch you may burn it out. It took about 10k miles after my chip, and a 150 mph run, to cause clutch slippage. I agree that the MT6 low gear ratios are close, but I don't race it like you do so it is seldom an issue. I prefer being able to accelerate at highway speeds w/o having to downshift, although that's fun too.

it is a stock clutch, and you are right. if i try to keep it in the boost and speed shift, the clutch will slip like a bitch. i'll be doing a stage II clutch/flywheel kit before long. i'm going to take a look at the ratios for a 5-speed and see if i will get any real benefit.

Actually you can get some taller gears from the euro version of the transmission.

Did you ever find a solution for the short first gear? I am having issues now downshifting into second now when it is hot...

First started when my son drove it on a roadrace course,,

I am told liekly a weak second gear synchro -- if I have to take apart the tranny I want a taller first gear and maybe second also..
