99 A6 2.8 - How do you check coil pack - code 0303
hi, how are u getting the codes. do you have a tool or are u going to autozone or the like?
i am getting exact symtoms in my 98 a6 2.8 but had attributed them to maybe being off on my timing. i have just completed doing the timing belt, water pump, pullies, tensioner etc.
due to a bad thermo. however come to think about it my son (who drove it into the ground) complained about the car doing just what you described right before it starting overheating. i then took it off the road and pulled it all apart. when starting for the first time this weekend i had to depress the gas pedal to the floor to get gas into the system. it now misfires , or acts like its empty of gas and no power or fires up and then misfires but after 4k rpm or so seems fine. let it back idle and it either stalls or sputters.......... ?

yea i used the cam locking bar etc.....i've done a few other cars i've owed and have not had this problem. drove it (well crawled along) to autozone and had the codes pulled and the only code that came up was p1857.
i'm thinking everything the tranny......... from what i read that makes perfect sense because i disconnected the battery right before the thermo work for a busted hose and it ran like it does right now (barley moving with no idle and struggling to run) and then all of a sudded ran fine.
I can not find a lot of material on this tranny code other than to turn the key on for a few minutes after disconnecting the battery and seeing if it resets.
if i had missed a tooth somehow would i not get codes related to timing issues?
or if was fuel pump or the like would those codes not come up?
thanks for any input........

Yes, but you cannot check the primary, you can only check across the secondaries. Pull the plug wires and measure - should be 8-14k ohms. Chck your plug wires too - should be 4-6k ohms. If those are ok, then we check the coil power output at the terminals.. but you need an LED tester.
Checked the coil pack, It looks good, its only a few years old, its a cheap one from China. I don't even see a part number on it. Across the coils I get 10,600 ohms on all three coils, so that is consistent and appears to be as expected. The power wire should be a thicker wire that is not the brown wire. From the power pin to the coil pins I am getting right around 1,000 ohms, I know it was noted you cant test the primary, so not sure that means anything, but my thinking is they are consistent, if one of the coil packs was bad I would think that one would not match the others. Or if there was no resistance, then that would indicate a problem.
Next I will use a spark plug test kit to check for spark. OK, hope this helps.
