Default 99' A6 Maf Problem

I'm looking to replace the Maf on my A6 and wondered if there was one that would give me a little more performance. Like maybe one from a S6 or something similar.

I'm also wondering about the number on the side of the unit. This one has the number 078 133 471C. If I'm looking on ebay for one how important is the letter following the number? I've seen others with the same number but have a different letter following.

I'm pretty sure with my code P1857, load control error and also a lean code for the Maf that I should just step up and buy one but how do I make sure I'm getting the right one without going to the stealership.

Thanks very much, Happy Holidays!

For your year, '99, the parts list calls out a C suffix (the E is for 00-01). The ECU is probably calibrated for it so you should stick to it unless you like asking for trouble. And, the part is specific to your engine.

Have you tried cleaning it really well?

Hey Bob,
Thanks for checking that number on the Maf for me. Sounds like replacing if necessary with the same as what is in there now is the only way to go.

I hadn't really thought about cleaning because this car now has about 170k on it. I guess its worth a try considering the cost of a new unit versus cleaning.

The dealer wanted just under $200 for the new Maf and I could probably find a aftermarket on ebay for about half that.

A can of Maf cleaner is probably $5 or $6 so if the weather is good tomorrow I'm going to give that a try first.

Thanks very much for your reply!

Default update on trans and Maf problem

Hello,
I installed a new Maf sensor yesterday and I think the major problems with the transmission going into limp mode are gone.

We drove it three times now and put it into reverse each time and so far everything is good. Used to be if you reset the tcu, and if you put it into reverse it would go into limp mode every time.

So, if your trans is going into limp mode and you also have a Maf sensor code you might just find the Maf will take care of the problem with the trans!

My A6 is on my good list again!

Thanks,
Mm

Very interesting! I hope it continues to work for you. Was that a brand new from the dealer MAF?

Actually I went cheap because I wasn't positive that it would take care of the problem and I bought a used one. Paid $40 for a used one and after a 200 mile trip yesterday I'm satisfied that the problem is solved.

If your trans is going into limp mode and you also have a lean code from the Maf you might want to buy a new Maf and get it over with.

Worked for me!

Thanks!
