Default 99 A6 sluggish

I purchased a 99 audi a6 automatic maybe a week or so ago. The man that owned it did not drive it for awhile, because he was sick and I'm thinking maybe this could be the problem. Anyway, when I hit the gas the car does not take off. First and second seem to be really sluggish, then somewhere between third and fourth the car gets up speed. Is this normal or what could possibly be the issue????? Thanks in advance for any help

Does it feel like the transmission is not shifting/engaging properly or the engine is lagging while under throttle?

Our 99 A6 is not what I would call a power house off the line. Try using the manual shift mode, holding the shfts a bit longer to see if the 'power curve' changes. It may be as simple as trans fluid being low. Not enough to cause slip but enough to mess w/the shifting. ZF Trans are known to fill sensitive.

UberTeile it feels like it maybe more the transmission than the engine. Stuckinnj I tried the manual shift and it felt a little better. I'm having someone check the trans fluid today. It was my mistake thinking the mechanic did this when he had the car

Well, you might get lucky with a fluid level top-up but we've certainly had our share of trans. horror stories here. Ask your mechanic if he/she has OE fluid & VAG software...you can't really do the job without it.

It's not uncommon for a tech to check the trans fluid at the incorrect temperature. Since going to dipstickless (is that really a word) trans, checking fluid requires the trans to be just off cold. If you check fully warmed up, the trans fluid expands and will 'burp' fluid out the level hole. Unknowing techs see this as an overfill condition and drain the excess. You now have a trans at less then proper fill amount, thus causing all sorts of driveability issues.
