I have a 2003 2.7T A6. The check engine light comes on from time to time. I tighten the gas cap and the light stays on. The dipstick is in and the oil filler cap is tight. The light will go off after a day or two. Then a few days later the light come back on and goes off in the same day. What else causes the light to come on and off? Getting to my dealer usually is three weeks out.

Do you have an autozone nearby? Take it to them, they will scan the codes for free. Write down the fault code, and bring it back and post it here.
