I was recently in the market for a 01-03 Audi A6/Allroad and the 4.2 and 2.7T were the top 2 on my list. In my area, Washington State, for a 01 Audi A6 4.2 with 72k miles and full service preforumed up to that point I would expect to pay around $14,000. Now, that's for a clean car, no bit stains on the carpet, no big scratches or dents, ect. And keep in mind, prices are different for different areas of the world.

It really does depend on where you live. Here in MN an 01 4.2 with ~80k would go for $13,000. I would not pay that seeing as you will be needing a timing belt job soon. I think 12k is a fair price if you have not done the timing belt.
