A6 4.2 vs 2.8 tire/rim comparison
I purchased a set of 255/40/17 tires/wheels on eBay for my 2.8, that are just a bit too wide it seems. They don't rub, but have paper thin clearance to suspension. Perhaps the 4.2 wheel wells stick out a bit further? Seems like 245 is about the widest for 2.8 models.
Does anybody have similar experience on 2.8 vs. 4.2 tire/wheel size?

The v8 is different. As far as the fenders go, they are much wider "flared more". All v6 A6 body styles are basically the same and interchangable. Only the 4.2L A6 and the RS6 share the same.
HOWEVER! If you go online and lookfor a "fender flaring tool"...... that will help fit your rims. It mounts onto your hub and uses a rubber roller ect... and basically "roll-out" your fenders. Its alot of work, and most of the time needs some body work depending on how much you flare. The kit costquitesome money, but ive seen people rent them. Good Luck! And keep us posted

The rims are 17 x 8 w/35mm offset. I just purchased them on eBay with essentially new Continental 255/40/17 tires (2 with stickers, 2 w/10 miles on them), and have put less 30 miles on since I put them on the car. I hard cornered and stopped, with no audible or visible rubbing, but haven't tried with the family loaded in the car....
Perhaps I should try to relist on eBay, and purchase smaller tire/wheel combo...perhaps somebody has a trade set of 4 wheels/tires for a 2.8 A6?

Probably only time where you might run into rubbing is extreme lock position where you are pulling a u-turn or something. As far as the diameter is concerned, it should be okay. But as for the width of the 255 series tires, 8 inch wide wheel is too narrow for the tire. You might have a lot of sidewall rolling while in turn.

Thanks a lot hxgaser. I live in a pretty small town near Infineon Raceway (Sears Point) and did 40 MPH figure eights in the parking lot checking for rub lock to lock - no rubbing. Thanks for your insight on the tire size relative to rim. I like the rims and want to keep them, and the guysat Big O have helped me out with tire sizes on a few of my other cars. Maybe they'll take my nearly new 255's in trade for some 235's.
I'll take pics tonight (OK - gottwinns), before/after.

i have some 4.2 pie plates on my 2.8q, i also thought they would cause problems when i first fitted them - i have had them on a couple of months now without any problems - they do look much better imo.

I sold a set of the 5-spoke 4.2 "sport" wheels to a friend of mine with a 2.7T (lowered with the Eibach pro-kit) and he had rubbing issues with the 255 40 17 tires. He switched the tires to 235 45 17 and no more rubbing. I had a set of those wheels on my 2.7T and I loved the look!
