I have a 2000 A6 Avant. One of the lights next to the license plate is not working. I have looked the situation over and I cannot figure out how to get at the bulb. Anyone have the information?

is it a licence plate bulb or a main bulb like a rear light?

 

On the read deck are two red lights next to the license plate opening. The license plate lights are in the plate recess, above the plate. The lights I am referring to are flush with the rear deck and red when lit.

 

Removing and installing bulb carrier



Removing



–
Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.



–
Turn light switch to “0” position.



–
Remove luggage compartment side trim cover.



Left side of vehicle:



–
Take out vehicle tool kit.









Both sides (continued):



–
Unplug connector -1-.



–
Squeeze catches -arrows- and take bulb carrier -2- in direction of passenger compartment out of rear light.



–
Take bulbs out of holders.



Installing



Install in reverse order.

I think that is the stop and tail light carrier you have sent pictures of. On the Avant there are two read lights on each side of the license plate recess. Those are the light bulbs I need to replace. I can not see any way to access them either through the compartment that has the warning 'X' or the licesnse plate area.

To the OP:

Are you talking about the two small rectangular lights on either side of the license plate?
Can you describe when they're not working, if it is the case that only one works when you turn on the fog lights then that is normal as only one of the rear fogs is supposed to work.

 

Removing and installing trim panel for rear fog light and number plate light



Removing



–
Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.



–
Turn light switch to “0” position.



–
Remove number plate.



Saloon:



–
Remove rear lid trim



Avant:



–
Remove rear lid lower trim









All models:



–
Turn left bulb carrier -1- anti-clockwise and right bulb carrier -2- clockwise.



–
Take out bulb carriers.



–
Screw out bolts and unscrew nuts -arrows-.









–
Unplug connector -3-.



–
Use flat screwdriver to press fasteners at operating levers -1- in -direction of arrow-.



–
Pull operating levers downwards out of handle mechanism -2-.



–
Take trim panel for rear fog light and number plate light out of rear lid.



Installing



Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:



–
Before tightening bolts and nuts, align trim panel for rear light with rear lid contours (even shut lines).



Saloon:



–
Install rear lid trim .



Avant:



–
Install rear lid lower trim .



Tightening torque
