Maybe your coolant level sensor died? My Volvo's would work one week and then stop the next. It was only 20.00 dollars (for the Volvo) and took 2 mins to change.

I see nothing about it in the bentley (as usual) but in the volvo it was clipped into the bottom of the coolant expansion tank. I don't see why it would be anywhere else.

Volvo thinks like Audi. Or the other way around
(disclaimer: Recovering Volvo addict here. If Fing Ford hadn't taken them over, I'd likely still be driving one)

I don't know about the 99, but on my '01, the level sensor is indeed attached to the bottom of the coolant expansion tank. It might be worth your time to reach under there and unclip it and check the contacts. They could have ended up dirty over the years (though it's pretty well sealed, anything's possible), and slam it back home to see if that clears the problem. If not, the expansion tank comes out with three screws, so replacing the sensor isn't hard.

The one time I had the coolant tank unplugged (I had to get it out of the way to work under it), I was a jackass and forgot to plug that wire back in. As soon as I started it, it threw a low coolant warning.

x2

I loved my 850. Had 313k miles when I traded it in. Just couldn't bring myself to downgrade to an v70. Got the Audi instead.

sorry i didn't know how to start a new thread so this one is the closest so i've put up my issue. i've an 98 audi a6 quattro audi wgn. i recently replaced the water pump, thermostat, timing belt, fan belt about 4 months ago. but now after four mnths, my heated engine sign comes on all of a sudden. i drove on the highway and it is fine but once i'm slow driving or idle the it blinks. kindly advice. many thanks
