I doupt it has a chip. My '00 A6 has no chip. I went to the dealer, $75 for the blank, $25 for the key to be cut. Bit of a ripper if you ask me, but no choice.

I am a locksmith and I looked up the key for your car. It seems that the key does have a transponder in it, but the car has no reciever. So a standard key will work.

yes I am sure about the key. I use a program called Auto Smart, it gives me all the info on how to make a key and what is needed to do so. Just to mke sure I checked earlier years and some later ones. You can call some local lacksmiths, if they have the right key dupicator machine they will do it much cheaper. The key blank should not really cost more than $20 plus the cost to copy it. The copy is pricy because the machine goes for around $15K.
hope this helps

Not sure if this works for you or not. When I got my A6 97 Q this summer, the guy had the newer generation of the key (switch blade style) with it. It's the one with the built in alarm, lock, unlock... switches on it. Dealer chrages about $200 for this (in CDN), but you can find a so called uncut one from ebay for about $40 and get it cut for perhaps a few bucks more. You'll have to program it to work with your car, but it may be a nice thing rather than a regular key. Make sure you know what you're buying though!

Just my two cents.
