wheel with the letter R/T <------------- what does this control?
and the button on the lower right with the PHONE symbol on it.

The telephone button is for voice recognition. Things like voice activated nav, telephone features, etc. The thing is, every new A4, A6, A8, and Q7 come with those buttons from the factory. However they are useless unless you have the optional equipment to utilize them. Did you buy your A6 brand new? Your salesman should have gone over every option and control with you during the delivery process.

Well, you CAN get those working, but you might have to add a few components to do so. If you are considering the RNS-E navigation upgrade (about $1500 +/-), you can go all out and get the OEM bluetooth kit ($600 +/-) which integrates very nicely to the car. If you are pre-2002, you would also need a steering control module ($200 +/-)to get those buttons to work with the RNS-E and telephone module. It is not cheap, but most of the toys for our cars are not cheap anyway. You could also consider this if you have the Symphony II radio (stock for 2002+ only), you'll have voice dialing with the buttons, but not much integration with the rest of the car.
