Default a6 transmission problem

my automatic 2000 audi won't move in either drive or reverse. it makes a reving sound and won't move into gear. what could be potential problems with transmission? i've never changed the fluid and it has 128k on it. thanks!

I have a similar problem on my 2003 A6 4.2L (see my thread on this forum) except that my car runs fine in reverse. I took it to the dealer and they told me that I have to get a new transmission ($6700). Looks like you are in the same boat as me. I am just waiting to see if someone on this forum can provide me some guidance before I shell out some more money to fix this problem. Do let me know how it pans out for you. Thanks!

Was this progressively getting worse, or did it happen all of a sudden?
I would attempt a transmission fluid level check and replacement if found to be low. You didn't specify if your car is a 2.7t, 2.8, or 4.2

Thanks for the advice. It is a 2.8. The mechanic said the fluid level is fine. They hooked a computer up to it and he told me they were programming it? He says it is now able to change gears. Hmmmm. I haven't gotten it back yet to see how it runs. Will keep you updated.
It was all of a sudden. About 4 days leading up to it the car was jerking into gear and I just thought it was water in the gas.

can the control module be fixed by reprogramming it? i was told by the mechanic that they will be reprogramming something and that it will fix my transmission problem. does this sound reasonable? i haven't been able to find any information online about it.

thanks

Althought this post is a little old... Just wondering if this issue was resolved by doing this??
Thanks!

Nope

His torque converter was the problem. he had to have a new one installed.

The filter on the transmission was plugged solid, probably the worst thing to hear about your Audi.

He may have sold the car by now because that transmission would have been next.
