a6 why doesn't it register "park"?

a6 why doesn't it register "park"?
also, the designator in the console is one slot off (ie shows neutral when in drive).
99 A6 Avant 2.8
the whole thing seems to have slipped forward...when in drive it is out of alignment with the tiptronic.
it also rolls when in "park".
nothing looks bent or broken from above.
what could cause this?
