Hi and thanks in advance for your knowledge and advice. I'm in the US.

I'm looking at a possible A6 purchase. Let me give a brief background. I've got several vehicles but no professional sedan, which I do need in my garage. I've got a 6.4L 392 Hemi Challenger, 4x4 Toyota Tundra 4.7L V8 lifted truck for truck/off-road duty, 4x4 4.7L V8 4Runner for winter/off-road duty, and a RWD 4.0L V6 Ford Explorer for daily errands. I'm seriously lacking in the style sedan arena and looking at a lot of options. I once owned a 2000 Jetta VR6 and it was a well-made vehicle related to the A4.

The A6 has cropped up. I'm a "no-replacement for displacement" sorta guy and would prefer a V8. I fondly remember the star car of Ronin being a Audi S8 with the same 4.2L V8...

I'm currently looking at what appears to be a well-maintained 2003 A6 with the 4.2L V8, and this one has about 150,000 miles at auction. Photos show a clean car, but heavily worn front seat leather. I'll go inspect it very carefully, and would get a carfax before buying. I'm not a mechanic, but I'm competent with cars and a wrench. Fixing an Audi is beyond my skill set. I'm not rich, but I do work in a professional career. I certainly don't want a money pit. I have a limited budget so don't want a bank-draining car. I know German cars are very expensive to fix and this is a concern. Not married, no kids. I'm looking for a good solid well-maintained professional sedan with great performance numbers, and considering an Audi.

Audis have a great reputation, but are known to be pricey to fix. I know very little about Audis, so please assume I'm a novice on Audis. So my questions are general in nature at this point. Please share your thoughts and opinions on this 2003 generation, build quality, that 4.2L V8, the auto transmission, any known problems, and the general cost of maintenance or common problems and expense to fix. Is it a fair statement to say the V8 is going to give me better longevity over the 6 or 4 cylinder turbo models (I'm not sure but I think those were offered in the A6). And a fair value of such a vehicle would be helpful so I have an idea of bidding on it. (Yes, I will do a Kelly's BB lookup but your feedback is helpful.)

Thanks in advance.
