My 05 Audi 4.2 has a chain. As does the new 3.2. Even some Hondas and Toyotas have a belts. Some have chains, some have belts, big deal. Check it out before you buy if it matters to you.

Belts are much quieter, & have less drag. The drawback is you got to change them.

It's just an engineering thing, there is now real dealership reason. I mean a TB change every 105,000 mi, that's not really a money maker.

Frankly I have seen chains break long before 100k and the modern belts are incredibly strong. When is the last time you broke a serpentine belt on a car? Now think back when people used to break fan belts all the time....a lot has changed.

Both have their advantanges, but I wouldn't fear having a belt instead ofa chain. Even some motorcycles have went away from chain drives to belts so that should tell you how strong they have become in the past 5 or 10 years.
