I have a 96 A6 2.8 that has reciently noted the "oil" where the trip odometer reads. This is, I think, a service reminder to change the oil. My question is, will changing the oil stop the notice from flashing or will a vag com be necessary to reset?

If its the oil light in the trip odometer then yes its the oil service reminder light. The VAG com is required to re-set the reminder on older body A6 vehicles.
