Common wisdom would be to check your level from time to time as you fill her up, and not just dump 7 Qs (or whatever the quantity) in it just because the "book" or someone says that's what it takes.

I run Shell Rotella T6 in my son's 1998 A4 Quattro 2.8 and it seems to be almost perfect; maybe a tad thick for the first start of the morning following a sub-zero night.

i thought mobil 1 0w-40 was the "Right" oil for our cars (with the 2.7T)... I've been using it and changing it around 5-6k miles, zero problems with the stuff the oil lubricates.

ohh, I usually buy my oil myself and then put it in the backseat and then go to my local shop, and I forgot to remind them that my oil is in the backseat. they put some regular crap in my car and it didn't run very good, I had them change it a couple days later, and the car was back to running perfectly.

Mobil 1 0W-40 is one of the many "right" oils for your car. That said, once out of warranty there is no reason why once cannot use an oil which field experience suggests is at least as robust as oils meeting the 502.00 oil specification. Shell Rotella T6 is one such oil.

The VW/Audi 502.00 oil specification is a well known spec in the industry; your Owner's Manual most likely instructs you to buy oil which meet said spec, and if you go to an auto parts shop, you'll find any number of oils which state right on the container that it meets the standard. As for which is the best, I don't believe there is such a thing as "the best". The thing is, Mobil 1 advocates will often say 0W-40 is the best, Castrol adherents say either 5W-40 or 0W-30 (also referred to as "GC" for German Castrol), and Amsoil weenies will say their Euro 5W-40 (which isn't even certified to meet 502.00) is the best. Long story short, it's a matter of faith as to which is the "best"; don't stress about it and buy whichever 502.00 oil your favorite brand happens to make.

Here's Audi's official list of certified oils which meet their various specifications:

lol. ok I'll stick to Mobil 1 0w-40. when I got my first 2000 A6 2.7T everyone on the audi forums couldn't stress enough how important it was that I used mobil 1 0w-40 ALWAYS on my car. I haven't heard anything about the mobil 1 oil being bad or someones engine broke because of bad mobil 1, etc.... So I'll stick to what works.

While I try to remain (certified) brand neutral, within any give oil spec, I do happen to have been a consumer of Mobil 1 0W-40 since its introduction roughly a decade ago.
