Default Audi A6 2.8 Quattro Satellite Radio

I have a 2001 A6 2.8 with premium Bose Sound system with the Symphony head unit /although vanilla looks and sounds ok.

I am interested in Satellite radio as my car was not purchased with that feature. Spoke with the dealer and believe it or not they suggested I go with an aftermarket unit as opposed to having them retrofit my car at about $1800. I contacted my local audio guy and he suggested an Alpine In dash replacement with faceplate that will make is look so, so stock. at about $800 labor included...

Has anyone ever done gone this route? If so did you replace your head unit or just use an FM Modulated unit...?

Any issues or Horror stories I should be warned about?

Jamitch,
see my link below for Lee's OEM SAT upgrade. His pdf is embedded. Happy reading!

You can do the OEM upgrade for about $400-$700 depending on new/used parts. The hardest part is finding a used Symphony II headunit with the SAT button (only on 2004 C5 A6 and 2004-2005 C5 allroad).

If you are really serious about doing this...then drop me an email with further questions. But, 100% of your answers can be found by reading Lee's pdf.
