audi A6 question (considering buying one.. with tranny issue)
I went to a dealer to find a car today, and test drove a 99 Audi A6. Mid way through the test, we noticed it would Clunk at higher speeds (50-60ish). We determained that the transmission is probably going on it.
heres all the info:
Power Door Locks, Power Windows, Cassette Player, Alloy Wheels, Tachometer, Tilt Steering Wheel, Cruise Control, Tinted Glass, Interval Wipers, Rear Defroster, Console, Body Side Moldings, Center Arm Rest, Power Driver's Seat, Power Passenger Seat, AM/FM Radio, Bucket Seats, Anti-lock Brakes, Dual Zone Climate Control, Power Mirrors, Leather Wrapped Steering Wheel, Heated Seats, Power Outlet, Leather/Leatherette, Rear Arm Rest, Sunroof, Body Colored Bumper, Rear Shoulder Harness, Interior Wood Trim, Auto Climate Control, Cup holder
The price on it was 9,995... and they dropped it to 8500 for me before the issue. Then after that they said they would rather not sell it but if i insisted on that car, i could get it as low as $100 over wholesale value(about $7500), or make an offer.
I realize there is no sure fire way to tell how long a transmission will last.... But what are the odds it will last for over a year (so i can save up to replace it?).
Anyone have any opinions?

not that you want to really drop cash up front on it, but if you are serious about the car, you could pay to have an Audi technician look the car over and determine how much it would cost to get everything back into normal conditions.
Me? I would save the money and find something in better condition.

Think about this and make the most reasonable decision for you.

Don't walk away....run.
If that thing needs a new transmission you can expect to have it happen at the worst possible time, and cost more than you anticipate. I wouldn't be shocked to hear of a $2700 tranny bill on an A6, and you know that won't be the only thing that goes wrong on anything that has an Audi nameplate.
I love my Audi, but frankly they aren't known for reliability. If you want something rock solid, stick to a Toyota or a Honda.

At $100 over wholesale -($7500) - they are off by about $2500. If they were at $5,000 it might be OK as long as the timing belt had been recently done and there were no other problems and the milage was around 95K. other wise run away.
