Audi smoking
My 2001 Audi A6 had the solid check engine light on a couple days ago, then later today, while the engine was running I noticed a light smoke coming out of the hood and the smell of something burning or rubber burning I cant really explain is it the spark plugs? If nayone knows what it is or how I should respond to it instead of going to the audi dealer please let me know, that would be every appreciated thank you
Go to the appropriate regional forum here and on www.audiworld.com and get the name of a good local Audi mechanic. Not a dealer, but a garage specializing in Audis. You may pay a little more per hour then the garage down the street (but definitely less than a dealer) but you'll end up saving in the long run because they'll be able to diagnose it much better.
You need to have a VAG COM reading done. This will pull codes from the engine computer telling you what exactly that "check engine" light is really telling you. Without that info, little we can do to diagnose your problem. Thus the recommendation of the garage.

I am not sure if this is related but I wanted to let you know.
I just received a recall notice for my 2000 A6 Avant 2.8
the recall covers 98 to 04 A6's avant and sedan
and 01 to 05 allroad quatro's with halogen lights.
The recall is specifically for the headlight switch - there is a problem with the wiring in that there are two leads that can come in contact with each other causing the wiring to overheat or catch fire.
There is no other information as far as a recall number or anything like that. It simply asks you to call your local dealer for a free of charge repair.
Hope that helps.
