Auto Dimming mirror

Auto Dimming mirror
I have a 98 A6 with an auto dimming mirror that no longer works. A film has appeared from the bottom up that now covers about 2/3 of the glass. Can this be repaired and how/by what kind of shop. The dealer said new is pretty expensive. I've seen others for sale on ebay, salvage yards, etc. - are any of the models interchangeable, like A4 or different years? I saw one listed that said works on 98 - 05 A6. Dealer said no. Who is right?
Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks

98-05 mirrors are not interchangeable. I have a 2000 and both my drivers and passenger side mirrors are the large ones. Some A6's have large drivers, and small passenger. You need to be careful when ordering mirrors as many ebay sellers are idiots and don't realize or care that they may be selling a large and a small or two small or two large. To them, their Chinese supplier said they will fit so therefor they will fit.
I don't have auto dimming mirrors but mine (as they all do) started to transition from blue to brown, as if the brown was growing in them. ha ha
I bought non auto dimming heated euro blindspot mirrors for maybe 150-200.00. I believe the anti dazzle (as Audi calls it, stupid name if you ask me) were something like 750.00. If I were you, I would just get the regular non auto dimming mirrors.
I was told that the reason the mirrors turn brown is the heater elements cook the oem mirrors and cause them to separate. I believe this to be true for my oem mirrors. One day, in the summer, they were on even though they should not have been and the drivers mirror was smoking. I touch it and it burnt my finger. I never hooked up the heater element on my new mirrors.
