Is the AWD supposed to sound that way?

Default Is the AWD supposed to sound that way?

I just bought a 1996 A6 quattro, there is now snow on the ground up here in ak and ive been putting the quattro through its paces. it seems to work excellently like ill stop in the middle of a steep hill covered with ice and snow, gently give it some gas-now here is my question, when i give it gas the front wheel seems to slip then kicking in the front diff transferring power to the other wheel, in the process i hear a girr sound coming from the front similar to the sound the abs makes but faster until i regain traction at which point it stops. I did some research and found out that the front diff uses the brakes controlled by the abs to accomplish the power transfer, i just want to know if that sound i heard is normal?

thanks
