Unhappy ...and "it" begins.

"it" being those dreaded repairs...Front brake pads & LH outer CV boot...I was totally blindsided by them.

I purchased my daily-driven Avant back in May. It initially took about 20hrs/$2500 to get it mechanically/aesthetically tight. I've driven 15k miles and performed 3 OCIs since then and I carefully inspect everything on a lift while the oil is draining. My front pads measured 10mm in May, 7mm in August, and now they're down to 2mm. They wore thinner on the outside, so it didn't trigger the inner sensors. My CV boot(s) didn't show any signs of wear, but one separated cleanly into a greasy mess. I've already had the pads changed...the boot gets done tomorrow.

The moral of the story??...you can never look too carefully, or too often.

You probably should have done both CV boots - the rubber tends to wear at the same rate. I had to do mine at 172k. I also replaced brake pads (and rear rotors) at 104k and my indie used Centrex pads, which have been low dust. I might go with a higher performance pad and slotted rotors next time for looks -- or just save my money and go with what has worked...and worked.

Thanx for the replies, iceman & ppgoal.

Well, you can bet that I'm going to be checking things even more often and more thoroughly now(especially the RH outer CV boot). The LH boot installed without a hitch(no seized hardware). I installed OE pads(4B0698151B) since they were on-hand. My front rotors are also halfway worn down(22mm), but they're not warped. I just need them to last until after the new year as my "transportation" budget has been diverted for the Holidays.

Side-note (as I don't mean to hack Uber's thread):
I put Mintex pads (I was reluctant to buy them at first) on mine, and I couldn't have been happier. They are very low dust type and the stopping power is excellent.
Although I personally am not too worried about "looks", the OEM pads the car had on literally trashed the wheels with a rust-like caking film that doesn't come off.

To be honest with you, I would have much rather prefered Mintex or Akibono pads if I had the opportunity to prepare for it. Oh well.
