My 2002 A6 recently started to indicate a brake light warning signal. I've checked the fuses and bulbs, in fact switched the turn indicator bulbs with the brake bulbs. Net result, the bulbs are not burned out. The manual indicates a total electrical failure may be present. If this was the case, wouldn't the entire system be whacked? Sorry if this is a repeat question, I searched the archives but did not find a similar issue.

If the word "BRAKE" flashes on the speedometer along with 3 beeps it indicates low brake fluid.

 

That's not really the problem. When I engage the brakes, the audible warning and Brake Lights message displays on the feedback monitor. I've checked the brake fluid res and it looks normal. Any other plausible reasons?
