Default Brakes

ok i know you guys must have heard this all the time and i tried finding it on the forum but had no luck. i have a 1998 A6 2.8 Quattro. its a dream to drive, the guy who sold it to me kept all the receipts and he had the suspension, CV boot and Timing belt changed. but the ABS light comes on when i start the car up and after driving for a few minutes it goes off. any ideas? i had the car checked by a service station and the mechanic listed that he "recommends" that i change the brake rotors. could that set off the ABS lights?

thanks

Audi has a standard of 28mm on the rotors for 2.7 T, and for 3.0 and 2.8, it is 23. If your rotors are below the specs, it will give the ABS warning light. It's not expensive anymore, you can get a pair of front rotors from the dealer for about $240 + labour.

If the ABS and brake light comes on together, it could be the control module for the ABS. If it's just the ABS, it could be low on fluid. I would do like Noc suggested and get the rotor specs checked. I have a 2.7 and I got some Zimmerman cross-drilled rotors for about $98 a piece. I put them on myself. Not to bad.http://www.modulemaster.com/audiabsbsrepair.htmlI have to use this service. The dealer wants $900 to do this. Good luck.

$900?? Thats too expensive. My dealer in Virginia, charges $750 for front brakes. That includes, new rotors, pads, and labour.

Did the mechanic check it for codes? If so, what are they? If not, have it checked. Brake rotor thickness is not something that will tripthe ABS light, but could be a safty issue.

Bill, I had a similar issue couple of weeks back, so I guess I can say that ABS warning lights do come if your rotors are not thick enough. I had a similar warning, and the dealer checked the brake system and advised me to go for new rotors, and when I got the rotors and pads changed, the warning light went away.

You guys must be rich to be spending that kind of money for rotors and brake parts...

I get loaded-rebuilt calipers for about $110 each and a pair of rotors for around $80 when I decide to do the brakes on my 200QT. I suspect the A6 will be about the same.

I use Force Five in Concord NH for most of my parts. 603-223-6700 Chris Semple deals in used, rebuilt and new Audi VW stuff.

NH_USA, no offence, but if I was to worry about spending on maintenance, I would have got myself a Corolla. When you buy expensive cars, you pay more money for maintenance. In return, you get the quality ride, tons of features, and a feel, which only German cars can provide.
