Great group, tons of info...

I'm looking @ buying a used 2000 A6 bi-turbo 6 speed..

It's a 1 owner car, and it is spotless with every record attached.. oil changes to timing belts. recent new turbos ( with in the last 10k miles)

The car it self has 150,000 miles on the clock. it looks like it could go well past 200k.

The asking price is $5,000

Any feed back if this a "great" deal.. or does this just seem "ok"

 

Hard to say on the limited information given. I would be concerned about the replaced turbos = driven hard or poorly maintained. But, then again, it may not have needed them but the bozo got talked, or talked himself, into replacing them anyway. Best thing is to look at the sticky and inspect all the failure points.

I have a well-maintained 2003 with 188k miles and oem turbos, leaking slightly. I figure it will cost $5k to replace them someday, but then the car should be good for another 100k. These are well made vehicles but they need tlc and maintenance to avoid expensive repairs. They also have a lot of accessories that can fail due to simple age and use.

 

Thanks for the feed back.. the car was owned by an older guy ( late 50s) and does not look beat @ all. My guess is the dealer might have hosed him into new turbos. I will take a look @ the reciepts in details before I make him an offer.

My biggest worry is all the electronics, and small things that can break over time. This car looks like it was way ahead of its time in 2000. I have been reading the forums like crazy, and everyone seems to love the cars.. But then again this is an "audi enthusiast" site .. ;-)

 

That is the thing... Enthusiast. We all became one after having owned one for awhile. But let me be up front. (I think many if not most of us share this feeling...) Expect to spend an average of $100+/month on maintenance/repair stuff. I am not saying that you will spend $100 per months, but expect to average that out over the years. If you treat the car well, then it will treat you nicely.

BTW, I was not sure about the timingbelt. You said the turbos were replaced within 10K miles, but was the timing belt replaced at the same time? Otherwise it is due for the belt change and related stuff. Expect to spend about $1300 if you are getting done through a dealer or a german indy who knows what they are doing.
