Default A/C compressor intermittent - '96 A6

My air conditioning is just starting to act up within the past few days. I've driven it consistently for 2 years with cold A/C. Now the compressor pump cycles on and off automatically every 9 to 30 seconds. But only when it's hot outside.

It works fine when it's less than 75 degrees, but over about 80, the problem starts again. (The temp sensor always displays the correct temp on the dash)
A cold engine vs a hot engine is no factor.
The engine rpm is no factor.
Idling vs driving is no factor.
It just seems to be the outside temperature that causes it.

I have done no poking around yet besides popping the hood while idling. The belt is fine. The compressor just seems to want to kick on and off for no reason.

Do these symptoms point to anything I should check out? Just looking for leads at this point.

Thanks for the help!
