cam problem
what can be the problem? the car is not running nice on idle, and i cant get any code on vagcom.
its a 98 model with a 2.8l..
the mark om the camshaft dont match the other mark. its only the left cam on the right side of the engine that dont match the marks. the chain link rollers is 16 between like it should.i have changed the chain and the chain tensioner too.
is the foto nr 2 right? the tooth and the mark align but on the manual foto the mark and the chain roller should align..
the cams on the left side is correct if i compair it to the manual foto, and the cam to the right on the right side is right too.
it seems to me that there is somthing wrong with the left cam on the right on the right side..
can someone help me with this one?

It looks right to me, but I can never be sure thanks to the Bentley picture not being that accurate. The best way to check is the slap the cams in the head and make sure that the notches line up with the bearing caps. Off by a little is OK, but if moving one link makes it better, do it. I found this out the hard way!
Edit: I missed the part about rough idle. Timing chain off will throw the camshaft position implausible fault and VAG-COM would be reporting it. Must be something silly like a vacuum hose hanging off.

i did not get any fault on the vagcom. if i got a fault like a position sensor or something i would know what the problem is.
the exaust had a gasoline smell too.
when i put the pedal to the metal, the engine fall down under idle and almoust stops on the way down, and after a few sec it goes back to idle, but not stabile. rocking up and down..
how do the engine behave with a bad vacuum hose?

I would go ahead and put the intake cam back in and set the timing belt up with the cam and crank lock tools. You dont need to take out the intake cam to replace the chain tensioner. once you get all that back on put the tensioner and exhaust cam back in and set it up 16 links between the marks. the cam will be off a little like in the first picture, but once you tighten the chain tensioner up it will take out the slack and line up. once you get there and still have a problem take some pictures so when can see both cams, not just one of the marks

now i have tryed one more time.. the intakecam is still of by 4-5 mm(foto nr 3). when i run the vagcom i got about 6 degrees of before TDS.
at foto nr 1 you can see that the tooth line up with the mark,if i compair it to the bentley foto its wrong. it should line up with the chain roller..
foto nr 2 and 4 shows it all but not so easy to see..
