the best, cheapest, easiest way to do this is to get the serial number off the top or side of the radio (requires you to pull it, special tools) and your VIN. Call Audi of America with that information. They will be able to give you the radio code (requires some kind of verification of ownership)

good luck

If you disconnect the battery, you should not need the radio code. I disconnected mine several times to do a reset and recently one 2 days back. Never once needed the code. But i do have my code in hand just incase.

You will most likely need the code if you remove the battery. Call audi or take it to a dealer and they should be able to get you the code.

Autozone sells a small battery device that plugs into you cigar lighter and allegedly provides power to the car for the brief time it takes to replace the battery. Thus the radio should not think it is being stolen and lock up.

This is NOT a fact, it's not likely that the radio will go into safe mode

I have an '01 as well, I've disconnected my battery a bunch of times, the only thing you will have to worry really reset is one-touch window control (close the windows hold the button for a few seconds, open the window hold the button for a seconds)
