Default Can you display codes in the dash?

Hey there,
My check engine light turned on this morning as I was driving to school. My question is, do I have to get a VAGcom to diagnose my problem, or is there a "super secret" button combo I can press to have the code show up on the screen on the dash, to the left of my speedometer?
This is an 2000 A6 4.2L V8
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks

Super secret button combo works great on Cadillac DIC. Its a shame that these cars dont do the same. Having such a great big DIC you would think thats the first thing they would do.

Do a search on VagCom and you'll get all the info you need.

One of my buddies told me that the local Checker auto parts allows you to use their VAGcom for free. I went over and got the code, turns out it's real minimal, and it hasn't come back since I cleared the code. All is well than ends well. Thanks for the help!
