Default Changing an engine on a A6?

I just got an 1999 A6 2.8 Quattro, but the motor is blown. How much work is involved from changing from the original 2.8 to a 4.2 engine? Do I have to change the transfer cases too? I know the transmission, ecu, the harness, needs to be changed, but what else?

It would be so much less expensive to just buy an A6 4.2. there is one listed on craigslist in Tampa that needs to have the trany rebuilt. Its Black I think he wanted 4K but I would just make him an offer it's been on there for a long time.

I don't think it will fit - isn't that why the 4.2 has a wider body?

Are you feeling that your engine compartment has way too much vacant space? I can't imagine how much tighter that would be. It is a much larger engine. Not to mention all of the unforseen problems to be worked out through the conversion. Suspension, ECU, wiring, exaust, brackets and cross members. I thought I was energetic... Damn.
