Changing to Mobil one
I just bought a 2001 A6 2.8 with 53k for miles. I was just wondering if it would be safe to change to Mobil One for oil? The people were using Quaker State Synthetic Blend before and I have heard that changing can damage your engine.
Change it. Don't believe everything you hear.
You should have no problems. I went to Mobil 1 @ 108k miles... There's a Mobil 1 that meets VAG specs now... 0W40? I can't recall exactly which one, but it will say it on the bottle. My AutoBone had it on the shelf. There are lots of myths and old wives' tales floating around about changing oil brands... or going from dino to synthetic. In the good ole days, there were some valid concerns, but there really aren't too many pitfalls to modern oils in modern engines. I'm no expert on oils, but I got 310k miles out of a 1973 Toyota Land Cruiser striaght six running Mobil 1 for the last 175k of that... it was still running when I yanked it out to drop in a newer motor. If you have a lot of time on your hands, do a search of this forum for motor oil... there's been an awful lot of discussion on this topic.
