Check Engine light code 0741
2004 A6 2.7T
I just had the car in the shop to have the EGR Vacuum soleniod changed....due to CEL being on. The car has been operting fine...since the repair, until I had the battery changed, and now the CEL keeps coming on.
I went by the audi service place, and they cleared the light and said it was probably due to the battery being changed. Later in the day, the light came back on...I returned to the service place and they indicated it was throwing code 0741 this time...which is something to do with the torque converter not locking up. They really don't have any knowledge with auto's and suggested I take it to a dealer. Anyone here have any ideas or suggestions before I go get raped from the dealer?
The car has about 70K miles on it. I don't know the last time the trans was serviced. I purchased the car with 50K miles on it, and it hasn't been serviced since I have owned it. I am just kinda suspicious with the current code since I just had some work done on the car, and all of a sudden this code starts coming up.
thanks!!!

There was a post here in regards of testing the lock up of the TC:
Cruising at 50-60 mph, tap on the brake pedal (steady on the gas pedal)
- there should be a moment of rpm jump (unlocking) then rpm back.
I tested 4 cars extensively (A6, A8, S8) - neither reacted as per the post - rpm change.
There were no rpm changes. I strongly doubt that all cars were at fault.
My conclusion is that this is not the way to test the TC lockup.
Any opinions

Check engine light code 0741
I own a 2003 A6. I just had to replace both catalytic converters at 126,000 miles. My check engine light came back on and now I am getting the same code P0741. I had the transmission serviced (fluid changed), but the light came back on. My father owns the same car (2003 A6) and he has the same code appearing at 76,000 miles P0741. He was told by a mechanic that this will not hurt the car if you continue to drive. I notice no difference in the transmission when I drive my car. Is it ok to continue to drive with this torque converter error message? Or will it eventually damage the transmission?
