Question Chipping - What do I have to lose???

Hello,

I know its been discussed more than its fair share. i have a 2001 a6 2.7t. I am looking to use an APR chip.

Once I get the chip, what are some of the risks? I dont have to worry about voiding a warentee. But what could go wrong with the car due to new specs?

Also, can someone describe for me what this chip with do? Like, how different will my car feel. Will change my mpg? I know that the chip will increase your power, Im interested in finding out where specifically this will occur.

Thanks, and sorry if this feels extremely repetative!!!

At first you will find your gas mileage goes down a lot, due to the sheer fun of accelerating hard. It also removes the speed governor of 133 mph. Otherwise it drives pretty normally. Things to watch out for...
- replace the throttle body boot with a heavy duty
- replace the diverter valves with heavy duty
- expect tranny or clutch problems due to the extra power

You don't mention your mileage, but a timing belt change at 80-90k miles is more important than a chip.

A chip increases the boost provided by the turbos. It will likely decrease the turbo lifetime.

Yes, and it requires pulling the engine to change them out. 30+ hours of labor.

I've been chipped for about 2000 miles on a car with 106000. I get about the same mpg as before (24.8 is current average), but the power is WONDERFUL! I usually use it to help merge at safe speeds or to blast past the jerk that wanted to merge on the interstate at 50mph.

I think if used in moderation (like all fun things!) it will have very little effect on the life of your turbos. Most important to the turbo life is to wait until the engine is fully warmed before using them, and don't race them and shut off the engine too quickly - drive around the block to let them cool down.

I have the stock DV's and TBB with no issues yet (although I have checked them a few times lately because I expect them to blow any minute). Clutch wear may occur faster, but that depends on how aggressive you are, same goes for your tranny if you have the auto. Avoid crazed red light battles and save it for the high speed pulls to pass people like they are standing still and things will hold up well.

It is a cheap mod, and it is up to you if you want to use it or not - it will drive just like a stock car if you stay off the gas, but has the reserve there when you want to have fun.

I wish that were true, but the fact of the matter is, the K03's are ticking time bombs. Chipping them just helps blow them up faster.

moderate use of the extra boost is a good idea. Letting the fluids heat up before using max boost and allowing the turbo to cool before shutting off are defintely something you want to do. But the ko3 is not as reliable as other turbos and the chip will not help the lifetime.

Changing both turbos on the 2.7t usually requires removing the engine, I think? That's why I bought the 1.8t

Ok, so if I wanted to leave the DV's and TBBs alone for now, its ok, as long as I dont go hog wild on the gas pedal?

I was probably going to get the APR Chip and then the EMCS as well.

Am i correct when saying I can get just the chip, but then would never be able to switch "modes"...

The EMCS just allows me to go back to stock and all that through my Cruise control switch right?

That parts confusing me a bit.

Thanks for all the help guys, truly appreciate it!!!

all of the above are true to some extent as all cars are different. I know 2.7T wit 200k miles on stock turbos and you'll see some on the forum who blew them at 45k stock!!!
But warm up and cool down are critical, also I would definitely do the TBB and DV at the same time to avoid issue.
If they blow, it is a good time to go to KO4s they are a lot cheaper these days.
Also, just keep a few coil packs handy as they or a few will most likely go sortly after chipping unless you've replaced them already
