Default Clutch Replacement

Hey everyone,

I'm going to replace the clutch in my wife's '01 A6, 2.7L 6-speed, 105K miles. She doesn't drive it hard, so I'm leaning toward a Sachs replacement kit. I hear they hold up well, and are a direct factory replacement.

Do you guys have any advice/ tips on what should be replaced while I have the tranny out?
Where's the best place to buy the parts I'll need (Clutch kit, master/ slave cylinders, etc.)?

Thanks,

Pat

A clutch kit should be OK - don't fool with the cylinders unless there is a leak

Really? I would think the slave cylinder replacement would be a no brainer, considering how difficult it was to remove.

I know most places sell the pilot and release bearings separate from the clutch kit. What do you think about replacing those while the transmission is out?

OK I thought a clutch kit included the T/O bearing and pilot bearing...

Go ahead and change the slave cylinder if it will help you sleep better. I have never had a problem with one - My last Audi's had 350K and 250K miles -

While you at it why not change all the hydraulic hoses and transmission mount.

PS clutches were done at around 200 K on both of them - I'm suprised to see that you need one at 100K

I'm not 100% sure it does. The car won't go into gear when it's running, and based on what I've read here, and on other forums, most guys replace their slave cylinders to find that they have the same problem. After pulling the transmission, they discover the pressure plate broken or cracked, and unable to disengage from the flywheel.

I pulled my slave, and it seems fine; strokes okay and no leaks, so I'm thinking pressure plate. with 105K miles and the self adjusting clutch, and the fact that it's a chick's car (did I mention it's my wife's car?), I figure it won't hurt anything to replace the clutch and clutch linkage (hydraulic clutch components). I can do it for around $500 in parts, and I'll know for sure it's good to go for at least another 100K, then.

Do you disagree?

cant see why it would hurt, if u have the 500 to put down anyways, and u want it done just so u can have piece of mind knowing nothing will go wrong in those parts for at least another 100k or so miles, i say why not, piece of mind is a beautiful thing

Hey while you at it why not change the brake lines and air in the tires!! LOL Don't forget the spare!

Seriously - the only other thing I changed was the flexable brake lines because they were cracked..

Okay,

I got the clutch out finally (after many beers and wonder why I'm doing this....Oh yeah, I'm reminded that an Audi actually DOES both play music and tell time!! The thing must make a god-awful amount of heat, too, because EVERYTHING has its own heat shield).

I found that one of the inner diaphragm springs is broken. I'm not sure what these do; there are only 3 of them and they're lower (closer to the clutch than the other diaphragm springs), and I'm guessing they're for positioning.

Would this cause the car to not go into gear when it's running?

I have a picture, but I can't post it. Is this because I'm a Newb?

Thanks,

pat
