On my 2.7T there is an auxillary water pump. It started to leak and sounds a lot like your problem. Fortunately I bought the car certified and it was covered. The location is in the front middle of the motor right under the plenum. This requires the whole front clip of the car to be removed. This is also what is required to change the timing belt so the labor is already done.
