Default Coolant Pouring Out The Back Of The Engine

Is this the end of my '02 A6 2.7? Car had been losing about a pint or 2 of coolant every month or 2 with no obvious leaks. I just kept topping it off. Yesterday, my coolant light came on and thinking it wasn't that severe I sat parked with the engine running will talking on the phone. Suddenly noticed that the temp gauge was 1 mark away from the H on the gauge. Shut the car off and let it cool down. Figured once I started driving I would be OK to drive it 10 miles home. Gauge showed close to H again but made it home. Once cooled, started filling and noticed it was pouring out underneath the car. Put it up on ramps, pulled of the pan hoping it was the bottom hose. Unfortunately, noticed it was draining out behind the engine and above connection to transmission. Couldn't see a thing as far as where it was coming from both from underneath and above. Checked heater hoses and they appeared OK.

Could I have blown some freeze plug on the back side of the engine or head? And to fix, seams to me the engine may need pulled. Not sure I want to go that route.

Any ideas or thoughts as to where the major leak is coming from on the backside of engine and can it be fixed without pulling engine.

Thanks!

Kurt

It is probably leaking from one of the rear coolant connections related to the heater. I don't know that engine but look at the top rear of the engine on the rear of the heads. There are some coolant hoses combing from one of the heads, probably the passenger side. Check all of the fittings. This was a common failure on the URs6.

Thanks ManyAudis! I'll spend a little more time checking out the backside of the engine and hopefully I find where the issue is and am able to get at it. Will post what I come up with.

Thanks!

There is an auxiliary water pump on the top rear of the engine or top of the transmission housing (at least in the MT6). It is known to leak, leaving a white residue down the back of the transmission housing. Sounds like it could have failed or broken.

Thanks ppgoal! Will definately look for that. Just have to find time to tear into it. In the meantime, bought a used '05 A6 with 55,000 miles on it as my new daily driver.

Thanks!
